South Australia Racehorses Can Exercise During 6-Day Shutdown

ADELAIDE, South Australia – The Thoroughbred Racing South Australia (TRSA) has released its guidelines regarding how the horse racing industry will proceed amid the six-day lockdown in South Australia. The controlling organisation for horse racing in the state released a statement, confirming that racehorses can exercise during the temporary closure.

In a statement, the TRSA said racehorse trainers and their workers could provide sufficient physical exercise and care for the racehorses that are housed in boxes and stables. Additionally, these horse racing industry personnel can attend to training venues and stables. The TRSA’s statement referred to racehorse trainers and their staff as the essential workers under the direction. The organisation pointed out that horse racing clubs’ staff significant to closing, opening, and maintaining racehorse training facilities can attend their respective training sites, as per the report posted online by Australian horse racing news and information website, Racenet.

Furthermore, the South Australian organisation that promotes, represents and supports South Australia’s thoroughbred racing sector relayed that, for the next six days, exercising racehorses would not be allowed to perform grass gallops. Also, racehorse trainers cannot physically train their sprinters. The TRSA is restricting these runners to sand and artificial racetracks. Moreover, when racehorses are receiving enough physical exercises and are eating their meals, the TRSA imposed that the personnel must observe all the social distancing rules.

The TRSA pointed out that all workers attending racehorse training venues and stables to offer sufficient physical exercise and care for racehorses must head straight to the training venue or stable where they work after they leave their homes or residential properties. These employees must perform their important activities right away. Then, upon completion, the TRSA mandated that these horse racing industry staff members must leave immediately and come back straight to their homes.

On Wednesday, November 18, the TRSA confirmed the six-day horse racing suspension in South Australia. This temporary shutdown has taken effect starting from 12.01 AM today, November 19. The TRSA declared that a shutdown is necessary as the state fights its sudden COVID-19 second wave.

The six-day shutdown in South Australia is a component of a state-wide hard lockdown, which is referred to as a “circuit breaker” meant to halt the coronavirus’s spread. As a result, horse race meetings scheduled for Clare, Naracoorte, and Morphettville this coming weekend will not push through. Besides, all jump-outs and trials have gotten cancelled as well.

Meanwhile, the TRSA released a modified race meeting schedule. The Morphettville Parks sporting event will take place on Wednesday, November 25. The Balaklava program is on Thursday, November 26. Finally, on Monday, November 30, the Morphettville Parks trials will take place.

The horse racing shutdown was anticipated following South Australia harness authorities making the initial move on Wednesday afternoon. The TRSA has conducted meetings with the State Government. Plus, the group already held talks with the South Australian Police and the South Australian Chief Public Health Officer last November 18. In keeping with equine welfare and wellness, the TRSA is collaborating closely with the state government to permit daily racehorse training practices to carry on.
