Top Tasmania Jockey Laments COVID-19 Impact on Racing

VICTORIA, Australia – Craig Newitt is the premier jockey of the Australian state of Tasmania today.

He is the son of two racehorse riders who also hail from the Australian island state. Newitt’s parents allowed him to relocate to Victoria as a young adult.

Then, while residing in the southeastern Australian state, he achieved a stellar horse racing career.

For 15 years, Newitt rode successfully, starting with Dundas Street as his first ride in 2000, based on the details published on Australian news and information portal Racenet.

Then, in 2017, he returned to Tasmania to continue his fruitful horse racing career.

This week, Newitt expressed his sadness over the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the horse racing industry in his home state.

His sentiments come as last Thursday, the Premier of Tasmania Peter Gutwein informed the three codes, harness, greyhound, and thoroughbreds to halt their racing competitions temporarily.

This official mandate takes effect for one month amid the continuation of racing in mainland Australia, according to the report by Australian horse betting news and information website HorseBetting.com.au.

As a public health advisory, the Australian state’s premier decided to discontinue racing in the meantime, including halting the journeys between the regions of Tasmania.

Hence, racing participants would not be able to carry on travelling from one end of the isle to the other for meetings.

Nonetheless, even if racing has ceased temporarily, the Government of Tasmania has given the green light on the continuation of the sporting animals’ workouts via track work.

All of these latest developments made Newitt express his concern for the future of the racing sector in his home state.

The leading jockey affirmed that he is mindful of the government’s aim to terminate the spread of the coronavirus.

However, he relayed that the shutdown has caused much gloom and confusion in the state.

Speaking on an interview at Radio Station RSN927, Newitt cited that people comprehend the severity of the coronavirus or COVID-19 pandemic.

He pointed out that they were, nevertheless, performing every requirement handed to them, mentioning not just the thoroughbred horses, but all three codes.

What made the premier jockey of Tasmania more melancholic was what he referred to as the lack of caveat regarding the forthcoming closure.

Newitt remarked that this situation made him hugely disappointed.

He explained his sentiments further by saying that they in the racing industry did not even get the opportunity to put their hand up and share their suggestions.

Also, the champion rider expressed his worry for the workers of the racing industry.

Newitt cited that there are approximately 2,000 horses, greyhounds, and more than 5,000 participants in the Australian island state.

At present, he said that plenty of the thoroughbred horses are in spells. Plus, many of the horses that belong to the people he rides for had already gone to the paddock.

This scenario translates to no racing for more than one month, he relayed.

Newitt lamented the fact that people in the racing industry feel stuck in the current dismal situation.

He remarked that without the matches, they could not afford to keep the sporting animals in training.

Newitt pointed out that the longer that the shutdown lasts because of the COVID-19 public health crisis, the more the racing industry of Tasmania would remain in the state of paralysis.
