 AFL: The Basics

New to footy? Get excited. Australian Football League (AFL) is one of Australia’s favourite pastimes, and is played nationwide. Think Dusty Martin, Gary Ablett, Patrick Dangerfield, Scott Pendlebury, and Chris Judd, just to name a few of the most recent titans in the sport. Think flying marks, ripper tackles, and epic shots on goal. All of this and more in the wonderful world of footy.

AFL Season Fixtures, Finals and Medals

There are 18 Clubs in the League, and each team plays one another during the season. The 2021 AFL Season started in March, with Round 1 kicking off on Thursday 18 March. There are 23 Rounds in the Season, taking us through to Friday April 20, after which the AFL Finals kicks off, running from late August with four Qualifying and Elimination Finals, two Semi-Finals, two Preliminary Finals, and finally the AFL Grand Final. This year, the AFL Grand Final will be held on Saturday, 25 September.

In addition to the Champions of the Grand Final, there are also awards for individual players: The Brownlow Medal for the best and fairest player during the season, the Coleman Medal for the player who kicked the most goals in the season, and the Norm Smith Model to the best player in the Grand Final.

Betting in the AFL

If you’re brand new to betting, head over to our Intro to Betting post on the Home Page. Here, we’ll explain betting, odds, profit margins, the three main types of markets (head-to-hard, line and margin), and value betting.

If you’re all over the basics, it’s time to get started betting in the footy.

You can bet on all sorts of outcomes in the footy. Bet on head-to-head markets if you’re gunning for the Dees to beat Western Bulldogs. If you reckon Adelaide Crows will beat Collingwood outright on a weekend. Head-to-head markets are fun and straightforward, and well worth your time.

Bet on the line if you reckon you know how much the Lions will win by against Collingwood. Check out our analysis of handicaps for the best results. While you’re at it, why not bet on the margin, and make a parlay bet?

Our experts have plenty of advice on the best value bets in exotic footy markets too. Be sure to check them out so you can bet with confidence. You might find that the odds are more in your favour than you think!

There are a range of ways that you can make your bets when you’ve made up your mind for a particular match, game or tournament. It’s by far easiest to bet online in this day and age, and there are a huge range of betting sites to choose from. They include: BetEasy, BetFair, Bet365, Tab, Ladbrokes, Neds, Bookmaker, PointsBet, Sportsbetting, PlayUp, UBET and Palmerbet. You can usually create an account fairly easily by downloading each site’s app or creating an account online. Our expert advisors will guide you through round-by-round analysis, highlighting which teams are likely to get up each match and why.
